International architecture firm Grimshaw, and designer of Expo 2020’s Sustainability Pavilion, has been appointed by the ruler of Sharjah to design a new botanical garden in the emirate as part of a larger mission to encourage interaction with and education of the rich floral heritage of the region.
Similar in scale to Eden Project in Cornwall, UK and the Oman Botanic Garden, bother of which were designed by Grimshaw, the Sharjah site spans more than 60 hectares.

Appointed by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed al-Qasimi, the project aims to demonstrate and support the educational, cultural and scientific vision for Sharjah, and will feature rare plants alongside comprehensive scientific research and and innovation centres.
“The Eden Project is a great example of an engaging conservation experience with immersive environments and a rich education programme,” said Andrew Whalley, deputy chairman at Grimshaw. “Eden is teaching many generations about the natural world in all its wonder. We will build on this with even bolder aspirations for the Sharjah Botanical Garden.”

With a variety of immersive environments, the botanical garden will educate people about various natural habitats and the importance of conservation.
Located within an urban context, the site for the Sharjah Botanical Garden is adjacent to the Sharjah New Mosque and a proposed future residential development.
According to Keith Brewis, Grimshaw partner for international operations, the Sharjah botanical garden is the firm’s second in the region and first in the UAE.
“These projects represent a significant step forward in conserving the natural wonder of the Middle East,” he said. “We look forward to designing a unique experience for residents of Sharjah and all those who are inspired to address important ecological challenges.”
